Before I talk about the walk per say there are some observations I would like to make. As I’ve said in other blog posts, paths in Spain are very rocky and today was one of those days when we had a bit of everything. We had big slabs of rock, small and medium-sized rocks and even practically scree. Almost all rock in this area of Spain is sedimentary rock (the sedimentation is made up of dolomites, limestones, dolomitic limestones and a small amount of sandstone).
What I wanted to stress is that if you were a person who doesn’t really fancy doing rock climbing on walks, then this could be a problem. When walking in Spain and inevitably on the interesting walks, it could be a bit of a problem (it’s not rock climbing as in ropes, caribiners, harnesses etc.). Today’s walk would not be that recommendabe if you suffer from vertigo.
Today, I was using the track (the trail) someone else had produced and I found that in some parts it was pretty awful. The person seems to have made life complicated. So, when I went from South to North, you’ll see that I didn’t always get the path quite right. So, I would use my return version, my North to South version.
The walk itself was very good (fantastic) and the scenery was beautiful and in general it was a great walk. You leave Venta Gaeta along a straight path and go past a farm building on your right and a couple of houses (left and right handside of the path). Then you start climbing up to Pico Martes. When you go up, it’s fairly steep and the stone under your feet is a bit scree like. It’s loose rock so it’s not great for walking but once you get up the top the scenery is spectacular.
I had problems with the path and the trail but actually it’s not difficult and there are only a few places where you could make a mistake. There are a lot of rocks painted with the red and white signs for the GR7. So, if you look carefully, you’ll find those rocks with red and white paint for the GR7. If you follow my route especially the North to South version, you will have no problems.
