Stage 5b: Collado Bayart – Camino de Sácaras (02/03/2023)

This stage was another lovely stage. I set off from where I got to yesterday. Today, I am going south to north which is the logical direction. You start by going downhill. You are practically a road, not a good road but it’s a road. You stay on the road for most of today’s stage. You start going downhill, twisting and turning (the long and winding road). Eventually, you come to a flat plain which opens up in front of you. You walk across this plain until you get to the endpoint which I have marked with a picture of a house for sale sign.

You will see the photo of the house for sale on today’s trail in Wikiloc. There was no other way of marking where I stopped today. I went back home the way I had come as on other days. It was a kind of break going across a flat plain because all stages so far have been up and downhill. Today, for the first time, a large part of the walk was flat although I was practically on a paved road.  Some of the time, you’re on a dirt path but it was really nice just to be walking across flat land. I suspect it’s less of a strain on the old body.

As I had started the day going downhill on the way back of course it was uphill and that was a bit of a struggle. I was with my dog Sandy like every day so far and he was having a bit of a hard time. Luckily, I carry quite a lot of water for him so he was well hydrated. I couldn’t find water on the trail today, at least I didn’t see any. Normally, you’d find some place where there’s water. I went past a few houses so you could into one of the houses and see if they had any water. A lot of these houses to look as if they have been abandoned and nobody lives in them anymore.  I met a forestry worker and he told me that these rundown houses (which I mentioned in the blog yesterday) belong to people who live in the villages around here and they come up and use them. He said in the old days they used to do come up from the villages and work the land. I don’t think they work the land anymore because there are very few cultivated areas. I imagine, as tends to happen here, the families have had these houses for centuries or at least for a long time. These houses which are in ruinous state they probably still own them or maybe they have just forgotten that they have them or can’t be bothered.

It’s easy to follow the trail today because you just follow the road basically on my trail. As today, it wasn’t quite as long the trail as other days I kind of did a bit of sightseeing as I was going along. I go on and off the trails sometimes just to look at something. So, you have to watch out for that when you’re using my trail. I had time on my hands.
